The 1975 : Music Marketing Campaign Analysis

Biography: The 1975 are defined as an English rock band, forming in Manchester in 2002 following members Matthew "Matty" "Healy, Adam Hann, Ross Macdonald, and George Daniel meeting in high school. Their self-titled debut album The 1975 was released in 2013, reaching number 1 in the UK weekly charts and certifying platinum just over a year later from release in September 2014. Following the success of their debut album with British labels Dirty Hit/Polydor, they released their second album 'I like it when you sleep for you are beautiful yet so unaware of it' in February of 2016. However, unlike the previous album which ultimately 'tested the waters' for the band in the UK pop/rock and charting markets, they engaged in a detailed and lengthy music marketing campaign. Outline of the Campaign: Deleted all social media accounts; commonly known as 'going dark' on such accounts.  An ambiguous handwritten note, written by lead singer Matty He...

Paper: Key Issues Currently Facing Music Practitioners

What are the key issues currently facing Creative Music Practitioners in terms of music production, distribution and consumption patterns and processes? In this paper, I will be discussing the emerging issues arising within the music industry because of the changing online environment. Tim O’Reilly coins the term ‘Web 2.0’ to demonstrate the transition of the World Wide Web from merely static content passively absorbed by its users (Web 1.0), to a collaborative and participative interface that encourages user-generated content. To begin, Clay Shirky describes the concept of mass amateurisation as "a result of the radical spread of expressive capabilities," (Shirky, p.66) ultimately suggesting that new developments - such as the internet - increase the range of those with access to particular skills. This is not to say...

Research into Jonathan Dickins

As part of the Music Management Principles module, I chose to research into Jonathan Dickins. Dickins is acclaimed for his role in managing British music artist Adele and the creation of management company, September Management which has a roster of 21 artists. I decided to research Dickins because he is a modern music manager who is currently very relevant within the industry - particularly as he received the Manager of the Year Award in 2016 at the Artist and Manager Awards. Dickins is from a prominent family within the music industry, with his grandfather co-founding NME, his uncle the ex-chairman of Warner Brothers and his father and sister both agents for popular acts such as Adele, Bob Dylan, and Diana Ross. This led Jonathan to gain experience working with his family within different record labels such as WEA Recordings and leading him to develop his own September Management in 2006. He began working with Adele shortly after, being introduced to her by Nick Huggett a repre...
